laptop computer
A laptop is usually shaped like a large notebook with thickness of 0.7–1.5 inches (18–38 mm) and dimensions ranging from 10x8 inches (27x22cm, 13" display) to 15x11 inches (39x28cm, 17" display) and up. Modern laptops weigh 3 to 12 pounds (1.4 to 5.4 kg), and some older laptops were even heavier. Most laptops are designed in the flip form factor to protect the screen and the keyboard when closed.
Originally considered "a small niche market" and perceived as suitable for "specialized field applications" such as "the military, the Internal Revenue Service, accountants and sales representatives"[ battery-powered portables had just 2% worldwide market share in 1986But today, there are already more laptops than desktops in the enterprise and, according to a forecast by Intel, more laptops than desktops will be sold in the general PC market as soon as 2009.

The Epson HX-20
As the personal computer became feasible in the early 1970s, the idea of a portable personal computer followed; in particular, a "personal, portable information manipulator" was envisioned by Alan Kay at Xerox PARC in 1968 and described in his 1972 paper as the "Dynabook"
The first commercially available portable computer appeared nine years later, in 1981. The Osborne 1 weighed 23.5 pounds (10.7 kg). It had no battery, a tiny 5" CRT screen and dual 5¼" single-density floppy drives. In the same year the first laptop-sized portable computer, the Epson HX-20, was announced. The Epson had a LCD screen, a rechargeable battery and a calculator-size printer in a 1.6 kg (4 pounds) enclosure.
The first notebook using the clamshell design, utilized today by almost all laptops, appeared in 1982. The $8150 GRiD Compass 1100 was purchased by NASA and the military among others. The Gavilan SC, released in 1983, was the first notebook marketed using the term "laptop".
From 1983 onwards:
Several new input methods were introduced: the touchpad (Gavilan SC, 1983), the pointing stick (IBM ThinkPad 700, 1992) and handwriting recognition (Linus Write-Top, 1987).
CPUs became designed specifically for laptops (Intel i386SL, 1990), targeting low power consumption, and were augmented with dynamic power management features (Intel SpeedStep and AMD PowerNow!).
Displays reached VGA resolution by 1988 (Compaq SLT 286) and 256-color screens by 1993 (PowerBook 165c), progressing quickly to millions of colors and high resolutions.
High-capacity hard drives and optical storage (CD-ROM followed by DVD) became available in laptops soon after their introduction to the desktops.
Early laptops often had proprietary and incompatible architectures, operating systems and bundled applications.

Free Windows Antivirus Tools
One way to protect your Windows based computer from the onslaught of spyware and viruses is by having a good antivirus program. Most antivirus applications cost $30 to $80 or more per year.
Fortunately there are two excellent FREE antivirus programs for Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7.
The first is AVG. This great antivirus tool has professional versions as well as a free home version. It is good at stopping most viruses and spyware from entering your computer. It also updates new virus definitions automatically. Download your copy from AVG Technologies website.
The second choice, and one we recommend is Avast Antivirus. Avast has the same great protection and auto-update features of AVG, but also adds a Boot Time Scanner feature. Often spyware can be completely removed by scheduling a boot time scan - which runs before the Windows operating system starts up. Download a free home edition directly from Avast Software's website.
Please Note: both AVG and Avast offer professional versions of their antivirus tools for business and professional users.
Popup Warnings May Be Rogue Spyware
The program warning you of the threat may even run through a scan, displaying just how bad the problem really is. The funny thing is you've never seen the warning program before, but it looks legitimate. To make matters worse, your computer is acting funny. You may not be able to access the internet, your files, or it's shutting down randomly.
Then you get the punchline... the program tells you that in order to correct the serious problems, you need to turn on a special feature that costs money. Insert your credit card please. STOP! This program, and all the threats it reports are fake. The sole purpose of these rogue spyware programs is to rob you. If you do pay the fee with your credit card, the program will not go away, and thieves gain access to your personal identity and credit card information.
Rogue spyware looks like legitimate security software in order to fool the average computer user into trusting it. Rogues come with names like Registry Patrol, SpySheriff, Antivirus Pro, Mac Defender, Windows Repair, and many more.
Preventing Spyware Infection
There is no 100% effective way to prevent spyware from getting on an internet connected computer. An antivirus program is a must have, but it cannot be the only defense you use. We have seen spyware shut off the Windows Security Center; which disables the firewall, antivirus program, and auto update features.
To protect your computer you need to employ "defense in depth":
- Have an up-to-date active antivirus program running on your computer. There are professional and free versions that do a good job. If you have a professional version please do not ignore the reminders to renew your subscription.
- Install an anti-spyware program. For Windows we recommend Malwarebytes AntiMalware or SuperAntiSpyware. Consider upgrading to the professional versions of either of these two programs to get the auto-updating and scheduled scanning features. If you can't afford that, be sure to run your free anti-spyware program at least once a week. Update it first, then scan. For Mac owners you can get away with just running either Sophos Antivirus Mac Home Edition (free) or the professional MacScan.
- Keep your Mac or Windows computer updated. Apple and Microsoft are good at releasing frequent security updates. A lot of users ignore update reminders.
- Windows users should install the free Firefox browser, and make it their default browser.
Removing active rogue spyware (or any malware) can be tricky. Here are some good first steps to try and take care of the problem yourself:
- If you have an antivirus program installed, run it. Try to update it, then run a full scan.If you have an anti-spyware program previously installed, try it as well.
- Windows users can use the System Restore utility to put their computer back in time to a point before the trouble began. Sometimes rogue spyware can turn off your restore points or shut down the service - eliminating this approach.
- Mac users who use Time Machine with a backup drive can restore the entire computer safely from backup. Knowing how long the spyware has been active on your system will help you judge how far back in time you should go.
- If you have access to a non-infected computer, Google the name of the spyware program and look for removal instructions.

Parts of a Computer
Modern computers come in many shapes and sizes. From desktops and towers, to laptops, netbooks, tablets and some smart phones are all computers. While they look different, they share the same basic features and functions.
This quick tutorial should help familiarize you with the parts of a computer system.
All computers are made up of four basic building blocks. Here is a quick overview:
- Input: how the computer gets information from you, usually through a keyboard or mouse.
- Processing: once you tell the computer what to do, it has to process the information and communicate the result back to us or store it for later retrieval.
- Storage: a computer can save information in two basic ways; temporary storage (in memory chips), and more permanent storage (saved to the hard drive or other storage media).
- Output: once a computer has processed information it often will send the results back to you through a display monitor or printer.
The Computer System
The typical desktop computer system consists of the computer (either desktop or tower unit), a monitor, a keyboard, and a mouse. A complete computer system also includes a set of speakers and a printer.
Inside the Computer Case
The box (or case) of the desktop or tower computer contains several electronic components:
Motherboard, the main circuit board where the processor, memory chips, and expansion cards are attached.
Power supply, converts power from your AC wall outlet to low-power DC needed by the computer components.
A peek inside the Hard Drive |
Removable Media Drives, allow the reading and writing of data to CD, DVD, and Blu-Ray discs. Removable media may also be in the form of USB thumb-drives, ZIP-disks, tape backups, or memory chips usually used in digital cameras.
The Changing Form of the Personal Computer
The desktop computer is the traditional form of a personal computer. There are a variety of form factors that computers come in, including:
Laptop and Netbook size comparison |
Netbook, A small laptop computer that is smaller than a notebook, designed primarily for accessing Internet-based applications.
all-in-one computer |
While desktop and tower computers offer greater expandability, all-in-one's offer style.
Tablet Computer, a type of notebook computer that has an LCD screen on which the user can write using a special-purpose pen, or stylus. Some tablets use touch screens and allow the user to use tap the screen with their fingers.
Common Input Devices
Keyboard
A keyboard is used for typing text into the computer. A keyboard can be a physical keyboard with real keys, or a virtual keyboard on a touch screen. It has keys for letters and numbers, as well as special keys:
Navigation Keys or Touch Pad, allows you to move your position within a document, application, or web page.
Apple's iPad tablet has a virtual keyboard. |
Numeric Keypad, provides quick 10-key number entry.
Programmable Keys, some keyboards have special keys you can program to launch your favorite applications (like email, web browsing). Certain games and programs can have actions assigned to the programmable keys as well.
Mac computers usually come with a mouse that has a single button. Windows computers typically employ a two-button mouse. Clicking the secondary button (called a "right click") brings up an options menu. Mac users hold down their Control key on the keyboard and press the mouse button to perform a right click.
Buttons below the touchpad work in the same manner as buttons on a mouse. In the picture at right, the touchpad includes a scroll bar which serves the same purpose as a wheel on a mouse.
Laptop computer's usually have a key or button that allows the user to turn off the touchpad. This is handy if you wish to type without accidentally moving the cursor, or if you intend to use a traditional mouse instead.
